Johnson Chapel CME Church is celebrating 120 years in Paris, TX!

We are gathered at this time and in this place to celebrate the growth of Johnson Chapel C.M.E Church over a period of 120 years. The organization and building of the first Johnson Chapel C.M.E Church in Paris, TX took place near the beginning of the 1900’s. The location was on the corner of 4TH St. N.E. and Provine St. Many capable ministers served at this location. Dedicated pastors and members worked diligently and with a spirit of cooperation to make this church a house of prayer and worship.

In 1916, the year of the “Great Fire” in Paris, the church building was destroyed along with most of the city. The membership was able to remain together, and permission was given to use the auditorium of Gibbons High School for worship services.

In 1918, the church purchased the site at 444 3rd St. N.E. and the church rebuilt. In 1928, this building was also destroyed by fire. The church was rebuilt again, and soon ready for services to be held. In 1938 the East Texas Annual Conference was held at the church.

With God’s guidance Johnson Chapel acquired our present location up the street at 711 3rd St. NE. The church family is on one accord continuing to make Johnson Chapel a house of prayer and worship.

We continue to look to the hill from whence our help comes, all our help comes from the Lord. We give all glory and honor to God Almighty.
